Voss' landmark mountain
Lønahorgi is the mountain north of Voss town that you see from everywhere in the centre — known for its steep western flanks and the broadcast transmitter on top. The permanent FM transmitter went into service in 1960 and is still in use. The summit offers one of the best viewpoints in Western Norway: on a clear day you can see Fresvikbreen, Hardangerjøkulen, Vossaskavlen and Folgefonna all at once.
Three ways up
1) From Voss Folkemuseum Mølstertunet — the classic long route with about 1,330 m of ascent from the parking lot. 2) From Bavallen in Voss Resort — a road takes you most of the way, with shorter total climb. 3) Via Voss Gondol to Hangurstoppen (820 m) and then trail/service road — the most popular option in summer, and the easiest for visitors without a car.
Recommended route from the gondola
From Hangurstoppen, follow the service road through the ski area, then a marked trail up to the summit ridge. The last section is rocky and needs sturdy footwear. Allow 3–4 hours round trip from the top station, depending on pace and breaks.
Weather and season tips
Snow lingers on the northern slopes — check conditions on ut.no before going before mid-June. The summit is exposed; bring a windbreaker, hat and gloves even on sunny days. Lønahorgi is also a hugely popular ski mountaineering peak in winter.
